Japan is hosting the Olympics in 2021, welcoming 11,000 athletes from around the world. This includes more than 140 publicly out queer athletes and its first transgender olympian.
As more people in the sports world come out, it has prompted queer athletes in Japan to use the games as a platform for change.
VICE World News speaks to former National fencer, Fumino Sugiyama, and National rugby team player, Airi Murakami, to find out what changes they are hoping to see.
