Why I Find It Difficult To Express Pride As A Filipino Woman | Get Real: Hidden Emotions in Asia

In Asia, most youth grow up believing their feelings are secondary. Things like career, wealth, and familial obligation often take precedence over passion. It’s no surprise that many young Asians repress their emotions—leaving things unsaid, passions abandoned, and creativity stifled.

“Because people think that you’re showing off or you’re arrogant; the line between being proud and showing off can get blurred sometimes. When I share my achievements, people might say I’m bragging or that I’m full of myself,” Uy explains.

Uy started in the fashion industry at a young age. She was among the first generation of fashion bloggers in the Philippines, starting her blog, Break My Style, in 2010. Her career has since evolved and adapted to other content platforms including YouTube and Instagram. With over 303,000 subscribers on YouTube and one million followers on Instagram, it’s clear that Uy’s photos and videos are more than just a hobby. But Uy, like many Filipinas, struggles to express pride.
