Located just an hour away from Mt Fuji in Yamanashi prefecture, Minobusan Kuonji Temple is the head temple of the Nichiren Shu sect of Buddhism.
The temple was founded in 1275 during the Kamakura period which saw a series of epidemics and natural disasters. Nichiren Shonin (1222-1282) erected Minobusan Kunoji Temple thanks to a generous donation from Nambu Sanenaga, then governor of Hakii Go Village in the province of Kai (Yamanashi).
The purpose of Minobusan Kunoji Temple was to guide people with power the “Lotus Sutra”, one of the most popular and influential Mahayana sutras. On November 24, 1281, Nichiren Shonin upgraded his hermitage to a grand temple complex and named it “Minobusan Myohokkein Kuonji”.
