Mine Hakusan Shrine’s Koinobori – Tokyo – 白山神社 (嶺白山神社)

Mine Hakusan Shrine is a small Shinto Shrine located in the Ota district of Tokyo. It’s not too far from where I live!. There is nothing special per se with this VERY small Shrine, but people taking care of it are doing their very best to keep tradition up and running and make this little Shrine beautiful all year long. For example during Children’s Day (May 5th) or Kodomo No Hi, the Shrine is decorated with beautiful Koinobori Windsocks.

Kodomo No Hi, is the celebration of children’s personalities and to celebrate their happiness. During Kodomo No Hi, parents raise carp-shaped Koinobori windsocks, which float in the wind. Koinobori is linked to an old Chinese legend where carp swim upstream to become a dragon and fly to heaven.

Each Koinobori color normally has a meaning. The top black one represents the father, the middle red/pink one is for the mother and the bottom small blue/green/orange represents children.
