Famous for its many “hells” or in Japanese Jigoku (地獄) Beppu city is by far the best location in Japan to enjoy these natural wonders in a unique, yet quite touristy fashion. Beppu counts seven different hells, but two of them are, as far as we are concerned, the most interesting ones and today we will start with the beautiful Umi Jigoku.
Umi in Japanese stands for sea, and you could translate the name of the place as the “sea hell”. Thanks to its beautiful boiling blue water, Umi Jigoku is Beppu’s most famous hell of all. Umi Jigoku was created approximately 1,200 years ago following the eruption of Mt. Tsurumi. And despite its ocean color looks, the water in Umi Jigoku is actually around 98°C/209°F!

Célèbre pour ses nombreux “enfers”, ou Jigoku (地獄) en japonais, la ville de Beppu est de loin le meilleur endroit pour profiter de ces merveilles de la nature sans que ça grouille de touristes, du moins pour le moment. Beppu compte sept enfers différents, mais deux d’entre eux sont, si nous partageons le même point de vue, quelques-uns des plus intéressants dont le très beau Umi Jigoku que nous visitons aujourd’hui.
Umi en japonais signifie “mer”, ce qui veut dire que le nom entier évoque “L’Enfer de la Mer”. Grâce à ses belles eaux bleues en ébullition, Umi Jigoku est de loin le plus célèbre enfer de tous. Il a été créé il y a environ 1200 ans après l’éruption du Mont Tsurumi, et malgré son eau en apparence calme, sachez qu’elle stagne aux alentours des 98°C!
