How I Managed to Shoot the Yakuza | Bad Blood

Seung-Woo Yang entered the universe of the Korean Yakuza in his teens. The death by suicide of his friend drove him to start capturing the world, to cement his memories with his friends, some of whom are still active members of organized crime in South Korea.

When he moved to Japan in 1997, he started photographing the Yakuza elite of Tokyo’s underworld. There he discovered the intricacies of honor, pride and violence in the subculture.

Over the years, he’s intimately captured the soft underbelly of South Korea and Japan and has seen some pretty sordid things. He’s widely renowned for the rare access he has to the Japanese and Korean Yakuza.

We follow him on his news assignments, capturing the gambling games of fairground workers called the Tekiya and glitzy life of the Host bars in Japan, all while he shares one enrapturing story after the other of his noir life with the Yakuza.

Kominka Tanaka – Chiba – 庄屋の里 古民家たなか – 8K

Kominka are Japanese traditional folk houses. Usually made of wood, clay, straw, and bamboo, Kominka were as spartan as you can imagine yet many survive in the Japanese countryside. While they have always been the center of interest of those Japanese people keen on reliving the past, many of these Kominka have been turned into ryokan or guest houses. A new wave of Kominka has been booming in Japan for the past several years: The Luxury Kominka.

These new Luxury Kominka are simply 5-star hotels crammed into these old houses. With flat-screen TVs, perfect kitchens, huge bathrooms within and out baths, AC pretty much everywhere, BBQ set, and sometimes like here, a pool. Simply put, think of them as the Japanese version of the French concept of “Relais & Chateaux” where old meets new and luxurious.

Granted, these luxury Kominka are far from cheap, but not being able to travel outside of Japan recently has made them quite popular for people that are looking to enjoy the countryside in the best possible way.

Why We Protest | Down with the King: Braving Violence for Democracy

In August 2020, Thai university students called for reform of the monarchy, breaking a longstanding taboo in a country where the King has a God-like status. A year later, despite the arrests of key leaders and hundreds of detainments, the social movement continues to burn as protesters and police clash over a war of ideas.

It all started following a 2014 coup that saw general Prayut Chan-ocha take control of the country. He then rose to Prime Minister after a disputed election in 2018. The military re-wrote the nation’s constitution while the king moved to further entrench his influence and power.

Today, this youth-led movement hopes to reduce those powers while demanding the resignation of Prayut for allegedly failing the country from all directions. Their demands have resurfaced even stronger as the pandemic deteriorates.

In this episode of “Why We Protest”, VICE World News meets the frontline protestors of the Thai pro-democracy movement and the royalists who oppose them.

Former Art Thief And Detective Rate 9 Art Heists In Movies And TV | How Real Is It?

Former burglar Octave “Oky” Durham and art detective Arthur Brand look at nine art-theft scenes from popular TV shows and movies and rate them based on realism. Octave Durham is no longer involved in criminal activity. Since he has reformed and spent time in prison, he works with detective Arthur Brand to solve international art and jewellery heists.

They look at “The Thomas Crown Affair” (1999), “The Monuments Men” (2014), “The Art of the Steal” (2013), “Topkapi” (1964), “Ocean’s Twelve” (2004), “Dr. No” (1962), “Black Panther” (2018), “Hudson Hawk” (1991), and “The Blacklist” S2E14 (2015).

Could anyone walk out of a gallery with a piece of art? How are gallery security guards trained? Is gallery CCTV actually monitored? Do thieves ever abseil in from the ceiling? And does Interpol actively chase down stolen paintings?

Summer Night/Lights – Tokyo

Limiting Tokyo nights to the crazy neon lights of Shinjuku or Shibuya is not giving justice to the beauty of the city itself. Just a few train stations away from those two big names you will find some quiet places such as the area between Meguro-Ku & Setagaya-ku, where street lights, trains, and cicadas offer you a unique and “zen” like atmosphere all summer long.

Why We Eat Congee, The Humble Rice Porridge

Lucas Sin, chef of Nice Day Chinese and Junzi Kitchen, demonstrates how to make and unpacks the history behind congee, a Chinese rice porridge that has been eaten for centuries. Congee is a humble dish often eaten for breakfast, by children, or when ill; the porridge’s thick, velvety texture and abundance of nutrients has made it a staple not only in China but around the world, through slightly different preparations. Lucas explores shatin chicken congee, a comforting dish made with galangal-spiced poached chicken, century egg, dried scallops, and a mixture of two kinds of rice.
