Inside Islamic Boarding School’s Sexual Abuse Problem | Violation
Sexual assault cases have been dominating Indonesian headlines, including incidents at Islamic boarding schools, otherwise known as pesantren.
In 2021, 19% of reported sexual assault cases took place in Islamic boarding schools, making it the second most common location for sexual violence, after universities. The persistence of sexual abuse within schools has prompted massive public outcry and calls for better oversight.
In April 2022, Indonesia’s parliament finally passed an anti-sexual violence bill, a long-awaited legal framework aimed at providing sexual abuse victims justice and protection. The final draft of the law includes prison terms of up to 12 years for crimes of physical sexual abuse, 15 years for sexual exploitation, 9 years for forced marriage, which includes child marriage, and 4 years for circulating non-consensual sexual content.
VICE World News spoke to a survivor of sexual assault to find out what more needs to be done to protect and support victims of sexual violence within the Islamic school setting.

The Informer reveals what it was like to work in a corrupt rehab facility. The first red flag was being interviewed by someone under the influence, which the Informer quickly realized was a common occurrence. Patients were picking up on-site and staff were even having affairs with each other. Profit was constantly prioritized over patients, with serious consequences on their recovery.

I Was Sexually Violated By My Male Professor | Violation
The National University of Singapore, one of Singapore’s oldest universities known for its academic reputation, has come under fire for its handling of sexual abuse cases on campus.
According to an official report published by the National University of Singapore, complaints against sexual misconduct peaked in 2019 at 25 cases, almost doubling the number in 2018.
While the university has repeatedly reassured its students that the school will adopt a tougher stance against sexual misconduct, many students and survivors find these measures inadequate.
A recent graduate spoke to VICE World News about the school’s handling of her case, and how she was subjected to lie detectors and harsh interrogation during the investigation process. VICE World News reached out to all parties involved, but did not receive a response from the National University of Singapore and Dr Jeremy Fernando at the time of publication. The Singapore Police Force responded with no comments to our request for a statement, citing confidentiality reasons.

I Survived Everest’s Deadliest Avalanche | I Was There
On April 25, 2015, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal. Almost 9,000 people died and more than 22,000 were injured as a result of the deadliest earthquake in the region for 81 years.
The earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest that killed 19 climbers and stranded hundreds more at Everest Base Camp or higher up the mountain.
Though the epicenter of the earthquake was roughly 250 km from Mount Everest, the subsequent avalanche wreaked havoc on the mountains. A wall of snow, rock and ice swept through Base Camp when the climbing season was in full swing.
Expedition leader, Mingma G, was at Everest Base Camp leading a team of 23 climbers, 25 Sherpas and 10 supporting staff when the avalanche hit. This is his story of survival.

UFC middleweight fighter Uriah Hall rates nine mixed-martial-arts scenes in movies and television, such as “Warrior” and “Attack on Titan,” for realism.
Hall breaks down the kickboxing techniques in “Kickboxer,” (1989) starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. He also explains the importance of fighting rhythm and strategies in “Black Widow” (2021), “John Wick: Chapter 2” (2017), and “Blood and Bone,” (2009) starring Michael Jai White. He comments on the accuracy of fights in the octagon in “Warrior” (2011), “Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown” (2011), and “Bruised” (2021), starring Halle Berry. He also explains the accuracy of grappling moves in “Attack on Titan” (2013) and critiques his own performance in “Seized” (2020).
Hall has martial-art backgrounds in boxing, kickboxing, Kyokushin karate, wrestling, and Brazilian jiujitsu. He is ranked No. 9 in the UFC middleweight rankings as of November 2021. He was also a runner-up on “The Ultimate Fighter: Team Jones vs. Team Sonnen.”

China Banned Private Tutoring in an Exam Crazy Nation | Gen 跟 China
In July 2021, the Chinese Communist Party announced new regulations that they said would reduce pressure on parents and children, known as the double reduction policy. The new law banned private education companies from offering after-school tutoring in core school subjects.
Chinese students and parents view good academic performance as a way to climb the country’s social ladder, with a child’s studies often being prioritised above all else and exam pressure taking a toll on mental health.
The new policy brought to heel China’s ballooning USD 120 billion private tutoring sector, but the policy change has led to a tutoring black market, which could benefit the wealthy and price out poorer families.
