China Might Have Found a Way to Beat the Pandemic – Increased Surveillance | Gen 跟 China
VICE World News’ latest series, ‘Gen 跟 China’ is an insider’s view of the country as it navigates a post-pandemic world. In this first episode, we look at how China’s home-grown health codes are a step up in the country’s surveillance tech arsenal.
China’s big data, high-surveillance approach to the coronavirus pandemic has helped the country achieve a new sense of normalcy, far before many other nations. We look at the technology, the role it plays in everyday life and speak with experts to evaluate the cost at which this sense of freedom comes. Who are the winners and losers when collective health and individual freedoms are on the line?

A Woman is Murdered Every 3 Hours in South Africa
Female homicide is a national crisis in South Africa. According to the government, a woman is killed every 3 hours, and South Africa has a femicide rate which is five times the global average.
The murder of two friends, Popi Qwabe (24) and Bongeka Phungula (28) is representative of the country’s gender based violence issue.
On the 12 May 2017, the two young women got into a taxi in Soweto, heading for a night out. Three days later, their bodies were found on the side of a road. Two men were arrested in connection with the murders but were released due to a lack of evidence.
In this film, we hear from the families of Popi and Bongeka, who believe that the police investigation was full of mistakes because of corruption and lack of will.
We also hear from representatives of Amnesty International, who are campaigning to bring an end to gender based violence in South Africa, and to get justice in the case of Popi and Bongeka.
You can support the campaign by signing a petition to demand a thorough, fair and impartial investigation into the deaths of Popi and Bongeka, in which all evidence is gathered in a constitutional manner and submitted to the National Prosecuting Authority for prosecution.

How Conspiracy Theories Deny Science | Truth Hurts
It’s been well established that belief in conspiracy theories is related to a disbelief in actual science. The whole toxic frustration of conspiracy theorists is that they can never be proven wrong – all evidence against their ideas just becomes part of the conspiracy.
This is largely why, even though they seem obsessed with science, they always get actual science so wrong. From the moon landing to flat earth to 5G, there has been a constant battle in modern times between science and conspiracy.
In this episode of Truth Hurts, we look at how science denial has been fueling conspiracy theorists for decades.

Arrested 16 Times, Tibetan Activist Tsundue Continues to Protest Against China
Activist Tenzin Tsundue is no stranger to lockdowns. His family came as refugees from Tibet to India, and he was born ‘in-exile’ in India.
He’s been arrested 16 times, for his protests and for the violation of restrictions on the movement of foreigners in India. Now it’s common for him to get detained when a Chinese leader or Head of State visits.
We meet up with Tenzin as he continues to protest – whether it’s as a panelist on primetime TV shows discussing India and China’s border skirmishes, or as he is shouting rallying cries in the streets of Dharamshala, and even when he’s walking 500 kilometres to protest against India’s acceptance of the One-China policy.

The Sakura of Ikegami Honmon-ji – Tokyo – 池上本門寺 – 8K
Erected where the Japanese Saint Nichiren supposedly died in 1282, Ikegami Honmon-ji has since been the administrative headquarters, as well as the training and living quarters, of the Nichiren Shu followers. It’s also a famous cherry blossom spot around the amazing temple and pagoda.
Located on top of a hill within Tokyo’s Ota ward, Ikegami Honmon-ji features many temples and other cultural attractions that are worth checking when visiting Tokyo. Among these attractions, you will find the statue of Saint Nichiren, the Choeido Temple, the grave and bust of Rikidozan, the father of Japanese professional wrestling during the Showa period, a magnificent five-storied pagoda built in 1608, the majestic Ikegami Honmon-ji main hall or Daibo and finally the Tahoto, a large two-story red pagoda located on the west side of the main temple.

What It’s Like Being Declared a Witch in Modern India
Almost 200 people, mostly women, have been murdered in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, accused of witchcraft and sorcery. Witch-hunting is a prevalent practice in Assam and neighbouring states among many indigenous communities.
To try and decode the complex reasons behind why some people become scapegoats in land disputes, crop failures or even ostracised for their own religious practices, we meet women who were branded as witches and local activists who are trying to rehabilitate them.
