Why Some Countries May Not Have COVID Vaccines Until 2024
You may be getting vaccinated this month, but that comes at a weird cost. VICE speaks with experts on why America’s role in withholding donations of our extra vaccines and putting off waiving our vaccine intellectual property prevents other countries from being able to get health workers and the elderly vaccinated, and how that is effectively raising the global death toll.

Meet the Skateboarding Star From Rural India
Skateboarding became a thing in India in the 2000s. It was, however, confined to cities and centres where people were already ‘in’ on the skateboarding rush. But when a skatepark came to the Indian hinterland of Madhya Pradesh in 2015, it changed things for better, for everyone, and especially for Asha Gond. Today, Asha, who lives in Janwaar village, is a pro skateboarder. This is her story of beating patriarchy, tradition, and stereotypes to achieve her dreams.

Why Do Women Still Support Duterte Despite His Sexism? | Unequal
The Philippines is consistently ranked the most gender-equal country in Asia, Filipino women have relatively equal access to opportunities as men in the labor force, political participation and high levels of education. But if the Philippines is so gender equal, then why are misogynistic statements and actions still so pervasive.. particularly from the country’s President?

The Village Where People Talk in Bird Language
Story about a village in Turkey where all the residents speak a “bird language”? In the village of Kuskoy, villagers have whistled this language for almost half a millenia, but there’s been a worry that this language could soon be lost as the numbers of those who know how to speak it dwindle – the older generations passing, and the younger generations using mobile phones to communicate over distances. The reason they’ve used this language was a simple way to communicate over long distances. There could even be a bit of a COVID angle in that social distance has always been a way of life for these farmers.

These Korean Adoptees Are Returning to Their Birth Country, to Stay
The number of children born in South Korea, who were put up for international adoption reached its peak in the 1980s. Now, this generation of Korean adoptees is returning back to their country of origin as adults.
Hana and Ryan are two such individuals, who are building a community of transnational Korean adoptees, and tackling the ‘adoptee narrative’ with nuance in their podcast ‘Adopted Feels’.
This community wants to go beyond the common narrative of reconnecting with birth families, and wants to talk about race, belonging and the social stigmas that made South Korea the booming centre of transnational adoption in the first place.

How a Trans Woman Became Indonesia’s First Transgender Public Official | Rainbow Guide To Life
In Muslim majority Indonesia, trans people are often not accepted in society as they are seen to contravene social norms. In Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara, 2,500 km from Jakarta, it’s a different story.
Hendrika Mayora Victoria Kelan is a trans woman who overcame impossible odds to become Indonesia’s first Trans Official. She had left the Catholic clergy after coming to terms with her gender identify and had to make a living as a sex worker. Hendrika finally found acceptance after returning home where her community embraced her identity, and even nominated her as a candidate for public office.
Hendrika was elected as Head of the regional representative council and her story has since become a source of inspiration for other trans women in her village.
