How F*cked Up is Facebook? | Should You Be Afraid?

Facebook has long been the “cool” social media platform outlasted its peers from the mid-2000’s. It was the central hub for a whole generation to meet, plan events, and archive their youths. But somewhere along the way, Facebook turned into a toxic, political wasteland filled with hate speech and disinformation. How did this platform go from an innocuous social networking site to tearing apart the social fabric of society? VICE producer Zeke Spector goes down the rabbit hole to ask if we should be afraid of Facebook.

Will Robots Be the Drug Dealers of the Future? | The War on Drugs

We ask three experts about what might be coming next in the ever-changing picture of the War on Drugs.

A world flooded with ultra-powerful synthetic opioids, people buying drugs from AI dealers, Mexican cartels pouring methamphetamine into Europe – there are some terrifying prospects on the horizon. And yet, the US, the birthplace of the War on Drugs itself, might just be beginning to turn a corner in how it thinks about this whole failed enterprise.

How Sound Is Used To Create Suspense In Horror Movies | Movies Insider

How do you convey the presence or someone or something in a scene without the audience actually seeing it? That’s the special challenge of horror-movie sound design. In this episode of “Movies Insider,” we visited Alchemy Post Sound, the Foley studio behind “The Invisible Man” and a slew of other horror projects, to find out how horror movies use sound to play with viewers’ minds.

We had one of Alchemy’s founders, Foley artist Leslie Bloome, break down a few scenes from “The Invisible Man” as case studies, recreating how his team made sounds as subtle and detailed as a faucet squeak or a faint wind chime. He also showed us how Foley artists create a range of classic horror-movie suspense sounds, from unsettling creaks to mysterious gusts of wind, and explained how all these carefully crafted sounds come together to ratchet up the tension in horror scenes, making climactic moments feel larger than life.

Shukunegi Village – Sadogashima – Niigata – 宿根木集落 – 8K

Having been a port since medieval times, Shukunegi went through a prosperous 17th century brought about by the Sado Kinzan Gold Mine. It was developed as a kitamaebune (a famous shipping route from the Edo period) port of call for the merchant shipping industry. Facing a small inlet, Shukunegi is characterized by the crowded rows of over 100 houses built with plate walls made from ship planks. It has been designated as a National Important Preservation Area for Traditional Buildings and Architecture.

How Taiwan Became the First in Asia To Legalize Same-Sex Marriage | Rainbow Guide to Life

Same-sex marriage became legal in Taiwan in May 24, 2019, after decades of advocacy by the LGBTQ community. The bill establishes limited legal rights for same-sex couples in terms of taxes, insurance and adoption. This landmark decision makes the self-ruled island the first place in Asia to pass gay marriage legislation.

But gay marriage is divisive in Taiwan, and the marriage equality bill is still incomplete. More than a year after the marriage equality bill was passed, LGBTQ rights groups are now calling for a full legal recognition for same-sex couples and queer families. Currently, transnational same-sex couples cannot marry in Taiwan unless both countries recognize same-sex marriage. LGBTQ couples also do not yet have the rights for surrogacy.

VICE World News speaks with veteran gay rights activist, Chi Chia-Wei, who has been lobbying for marriage equality as early as 1986, and other same-sex couples whose lives have been impacted by the legalization of queer marriages.

@5:26 – Due to an error introduced during editing, this story originally spelled President Tsai Ing-Wen’s name as “Tasi Ing-Wen.” The correct spelling is Tsai Ing-Wen. We regret the error.
