The Toxic Mud Volcano That Wiped Out Entire Villages | I Was There

The Sidoarjo Mud Flow is an eruption of the world’s largest mud volcano in Porong, Sidoarjo in East Java, Indonesia.

This on-going disaster has been spewing toxic mud since May 2006, displacing thousands of people from their homes, as well as an alarming increase in serious health issues among residents.

The cause of the mudflow has been widely contested with two leading theories. Some believe it was caused by PT Lapindo, a gas & oil company drilling in the region. Others believe it was caused by an earthquake that occurred at the same time as the eruption.

In this episode of “I Was There”, we meet with Harwarti, a mudflow survivor who was born and raised in Sidoarjo.

Fujisan Kaizan climbing ceremony – Murayamasengen Shrine – Shizuoka 4K

Every year, around Mt Fuji, shrines celebrate the beginning of the Mt Fuji climbing route season. Mt. Fuji is both a majestic natural landmark and also a sacred site for Shintoism since at least the 7th century.

Taking place at Murayamasengen Shrine, Yamabushi Japanese Buddhist monks gather to bless this year’s opening of the route leading from the Shrine up to Mt. Fuji. Canceled in 2020 due to Covid, we were fortunate this year to enjoy this ceremony, even in its quite reduced capacity.

Sushi Master Rates 9 Sushi Scenes In Movies And TV | How Real Is It?

Sushi master Endo Kazutoshi looks at nine sushi scenes from popular TV shows and movies and rates them based on realism.

He looks at “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” (2019), “The Sopranos” S6 E1 (2006), “Gintama” episode 120 (2008), “Billions” S2E2 (2017), “East Side Sushi” (2014), “Isle of Dogs” (2018), “Samurai Gourmet” S1E7 (2017), “Dead Sushi” (2012), and “Madagascar” (2005).

Endo is a third-generation sushi master specializing in the Edomae style of sushi, a technique particular to Tokyo. He was born in Yokohama and has been working in kitchens for 26 years. He opened Endo at the Rotunda, an omakase restaurant in the former BBC TV studios in White City, London, in 2018. The restaurant is famed for its 200-year-old hinoki wood counter and rice water imported from Endo’s home town to maintain the perfect pH. He serves a 20-course sushi menu. In 2020, he opened the sushi restaurant Sumi in London’s Notting Hill.

Pablo Escobar’s ‘Cocaine Hippos’ Might Finally Need to Be Killed

It might be time to cull the world’s largest invasive species: Pablo Escobar’s cocaine hippos. The rapidly reproducing 80 hippos have taken over Columbia’s waterways, poisoning wildlife with their toxic urine and feces, scientists say. But not everyone can agree on what to do with them.

China’s Most Misunderstood Subculture

They have been shamed by China’s urbanites for their outlandish hair with some calling them “tasteless and low-brow”. Meet the “Shamate” community, a subculture created by China’s rural youths born in the 1990s. Found mostly in Southern China’s factory towns, Shamate’s fashion sense is inspired by Japanese Visual Kei, known for its punk rock hairstyle and makeup. VICE World News meets members of this dying community in Dongguan, Guangdong province, and sees how this subculture has created a sense of belonging for these migrant youths.
