Why I Find It Difficult To Express Pride As A Filipino Woman | Get Real: Hidden Emotions in Asia
In Asia, most youth grow up believing their feelings are secondary. Things like career, wealth, and familial obligation often take precedence over passion. It’s no surprise that many young Asians repress their emotions—leaving things unsaid, passions abandoned, and creativity stifled.
“Because people think that you’re showing off or you’re arrogant; the line between being proud and showing off can get blurred sometimes. When I share my achievements, people might say I’m bragging or that I’m full of myself,” Uy explains.
Uy started in the fashion industry at a young age. She was among the first generation of fashion bloggers in the Philippines, starting her blog, Break My Style, in 2010. Her career has since evolved and adapted to other content platforms including YouTube and Instagram. With over 303,000 subscribers on YouTube and one million followers on Instagram, it’s clear that Uy’s photos and videos are more than just a hobby. But Uy, like many Filipinas, struggles to express pride.

How Syed Saddiq and the Undi18 Movement Are Changing the Political Landscape in Malaysia | Influence
Syed Saddiq is a 28-year-old politician from Muar. He has millions of followers across his social media accounts and has leveraged this influence to create policy change in Malaysia – lowering the voting age from 21 to 18 with the Undi18 bill. Saddiq teamed up with a grassroots, student-led initiative, Undi18, to successfully advocate and reduce the minimum voting age. However, even though the amendment was passed, it has yet to be enacted. Needless to say, young people are not happy. Saddiq believes that when change finally comes, young people will become the kingmakers for future general elections in Malaysia.

How I Almost Burned Out As An Artist | Get Real: Hidden Emotions in Asia
In Asia, most youths grow up believing their feelings are secondary. Things like career, wealth, and familial obligation often take precedence over passion. It’s no surprise that many young Asians repress their emotions—leaving things unsaid, passions abandoned, and creativity stifled.
As a cinematographer, photographer, and rapper, Tang has his days filled. When he’s not shooting commercials or films, he’s out on the streets finding exuberance in the ordinary. In 2018, Tang won the APF street photography award—an honor granted by one of the largest street photography groups in the world. While ample recognitions were given to the young artist, they came at a cost.
“I don’t know why I do what I do. I just feel the need to create, create, and create,” Tang says. Tang felt guilty if anyone saw him taking a break, he pushed relentlessly for five years without a break, losing all the fun in the process. In an attempt to practice calmness, Tang allowed himself a day of passivity by allowing his best friend to call the shots, literally, with him as the subject.

How I Got Arrested By The Nepalese Police For My Rap Songs | Censored
In November 2020, the Nepalese Police ordered the arrest of rapper Vten for using derogatory words against the police. But this was not the first time VTen got into trouble over his music in Nepal.
Vten’s ‘Yestai Ta Ho Ni Bro’ has found itself in everyday speak in Nepal, but if you look for this 2019 track online, you won’t find it. Loosely translated to ‘This is how we roll’, the Nepalese police demanded that the song be taken off YouTube for its profane lyrics.
Samir Ghising aka VTen is a pioneer in Nepal’s growing hip-hop scene, but his music and videos have gotten him in trouble with the police. The country’s communication minister went on to call the songs unfit to listen to in front of mothers and sisters, and Vten was arrested on 24th October 2019 on charges of promoting “values that go against social norms”.
But to many in Nepal, these vague laws about values are actually a sinister way of censoring and silencing alternate voices. In this VICE World News interview, VTen explains how his arrest has changed his music, and why he plans to continue to make music true to him. His simple advice to those affected: don’t listen to them around your mum.
