Latinas Shaking Up the Lowrider Car Scene | Irreplaceable | Refinery29
Women have always been present in the lowrider car scene, but men have usually predetermined their place to be in the passenger seat or posing seductively in front of their cars. Two years ago, Angel and her sister challenged this outdated thinking by establishing Dueñas Car Club, a space for women who want to drive and work on their own lowrider cars the freedom and support to do so. Now, Angel and other women like Sonia aka @lowrider_mama are making sure their presence is known in the scene so that other young women can see that it’s possible for women to be behind the wheel.

How Fake IDs Are Made For Movie And TV Characters | Movies Insider
Creating truly convincing fake IDs for film and TV requires an obsessive attention to detail — and things can get thorny with the law.
We visited Ross MacDonald, a graphic prop artist in Connecticut, and The Hand Prop Room, a prop house in Los Angeles, to find out what it takes to forge realistic ID cards and documents for fictional characters. They break down the ins and outs of creating authentic-looking IDs for movies and TV shows set in every era. Plus, they walk us through some of the legal issues that this work brings up and explain how they avoid running into trouble with the law.
The artists at The Hand Prop Room demo their process for creating convincing on-screen IDs for movies like “Black Widow” and shows like “Bones.” They demo how they replicate specific security features of contemporary IDs, from the embossed numbers on a California driver’s license to the holographics found on many modern passports.
Ross shows us how he meticulously recreates historical passports, driver’s licenses, and government agency IDs for shows like HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” laboring over details as tiny as the perforated edges on a historical stamp.
The Hand Prop Room was behind the McLovin fake ID in “Superbad” — a prop that was supposed to look unconvincing — but most of the studio’s work focuses on making IDs look as authentic as possible on screen. It has created prop IDs for “Sex and the City,” “The Hangover Part II,” “Zodiac,” “The Departed,” “Mare of Easttown,” “Black-ish,” “Ted,” and “Two and a Half Men,” and other kinds of props for “Mank,” “Little Women,” “The Mandalorian,” “The Hunger Games,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”
Ross has created graphic props for over 100 movies and shows, including “The Hateful Eight,” “John Wick,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “National Treasure: Book of Secrets,” “The Report,” “The Adjustment Bureau,” “Parks and Recreation,” “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” “The Book of Eli,” and “The Legend of Zorro.” One of Ross’ specialties is creating painstakingly accurate historical documentation for period settings. His upcoming book, “Prop Man,” is out in May.

Shisen-do – Kyoto – 詩仙堂丈山寺
Shisen-do is a Buddhist temple of the Soto Zen. Located in Kyoto’s less traveled Higashiyama district, Shisen-do is famous for its quiet atmosphere and gorgeous autumn leaves. Shisen-do was built in 1641 as a retirement villa by Ishikawa Johanna. He was a samurai, Chinese classics scholar, and landscape architect.
Besides its peaceful garden, Shisen-do is also known for its unique collection of 36 portraits of ancient Chinese poets.

How Removing Their Wombs Help These Women Earn Their Living | Politics of Sex
Women in Beed, an impoverished, drought-hit district in the western Indian state of Maharashtra are resorting to getting their uterus removed. Married off at an early age, these women have become a part of the unorganised labour economy, earning as little as 3 dollars after working for 18 hours in sugarcane fields every day, seven days in a week. The fields lack access to basic amenities and this often leads to infections that go untreated for years. When these women seek medical assistance, they are told that a hysterectomy is their only way out. In order to pay for these surgeries they take loans and then end up spending years paying off their debt. In this episode of Politics of Sex, VICE meets some of these women along with social activist Manisha Tokle to figure out how this cycle is trapping them and how medical malpractice is a factor in it as well.

How Bleeding Prosthetics Are Created For Movies And TV | Movies Insider
Creating Hollywood’s bloodiest scenes requires equal parts art and science. We visited Brett Schmidt and Greg Pikulski at the prosthetic makeup and practical effects studio SPFX to find out how they create bleeding prosthetics for movies and TV.
Having worked on mob movies like “The Irishman,” crime dramas like “Ray Donovan,” horror movies like “The Dead Don’t Die,” and medical shows like “New Amsterdam,” Brett and Greg know how to create gnarly injuries on camera. They show us how they would create the effects for a cut artery, an abdomen slash, a gunshot to the head, and more, using materials ranging from a garden sprayer to a blood cannon.
They break down how to pull off grounded, realistic blood effects, like a bullet or laceration wound, as well as more stylized ones, like a Quentin Tarantino-style kill. Find out the distinct challenges of making actors convincingly gush, spurt, and spill blood on screen.
