Koi Fish – 鯉 – 4K Ultra HD

Koi carp or more specifically nishikigoi are a huge part of Japanese culture. Thought to be the symbol of luck, prosperity and good fortune, the Koi carp is also venerated by its natural attributes that are perseverance, strength and its tattooed-like body, which are all closely tied to the Japanese national identity.

And to be honest, how can you not be amazed to see these gorgeous looking fish swimming quietly and in groups in one of Japans many amazing little ponds like the one of the Happo-En that we previously featured here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v94kpKUFvOY

Suzaka Classic Museum – Nagano – 長野県須坂クラシックミュージアム – 4K Ultra HD

Nagano Suzaka Classic Museum – 長野県須坂クラシックミュージアム : Located half an hour by car from the snow monkeys of Jigokudani (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPxrseYWfds), Suzaka is a quaint historical town featuring a few museums like the “Nobutaka Oka Collection Suzaka Classic Museum” also known as the Suzaka Classic Museum.

Calling this place a “museum” is actually inaccurate and don’t expect too much, however if you always have been interested in visiting an empty Japanese mansion then this place will provide you with just that.

Entering this house is like entering into some kind of time vortex taking you back a few hundred years back into the past. While extremely cold in winter, this two storey house was in fact a pretty fancy place to live that only wealthy Japanese people could afford. Simple and quiet, but majestic in its way this mansion is a great example of past Japanese architecture and craftwork.

Yasukuni Shrine- Tokyo – 靖国神社 – 4K Ultra HD

Founded in 1869 by the Emperor Meiji, the Yasukuni Shrine is unfortunately known by many outside Japan for being the center of some controversy. Nevertheless, the Yasukuni Shrine is one of Japan’s most famous shrines and dedicated to anyone, Japanese or not, soldier or not, that lost their lives while serving Japan.

Modest in size, Yasukuni is nonetheless an impressive Shrine and once a year holds a fantastic festival called the Mitama Matsuri, featuring around 30,000 lanterns (Mitama). Also controversial for some is the presence of the Yushukan museum that commemorates and documents Japan’s past wars that may not be of much interest for most tourists visiting the place.
Finally, far from any sensible subject, Yasukuni also features a nice little pond filled with many Koi fish that many people seems to ignore. Located just behind the main shrine, this little pond is perfect for anyone who’s looking for some well-earned rest and peace in this sleepless city that is Tokyo.

Toshogu Shrine – Nikko – 日光東照宮 – 4K Ultra HD

The Toshogu Shrine in Nikko is a very popular tourist attraction for both Japanese and foreigners alike. It is the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled Japan for over 250 years.

The shrine consists of more than a dozen buildings located in a beautiful forest outside the main city. The design and complexity of the shrine’s decorations are unique, and a marked contrast to the typically simple and understated shrines in Japan. The architectural design of this shrine spread to other locations such as the Nezu Shrine in Tokyo or the Toshogu Shrine of Ueno.

For those who are adventurous and don’t mind climbing some stairs, you can follow the path to the tomb of Ieyasu. There you will find Nemurineko, a famous carving of a sleeping cat. While the tomb isn’t as spectacular as the shrine, the surrounding forest gives the tomb an eerie mystic feeling, making it worth your walk to get there.
