Ibaraki Oaraiisosaki Shrine – 大洗磯前神社 – 4K Ultra HD
Ibaraki Oaraiisosaki Shrine – 大洗磯前神社 – 4K Ultra HD : Erected in 856, the Oaraiisosaki Shrine, also known as Orai Isosaki-Jinja, houses a deity of medicine who’s known for granting happiness and matchmaking couples. Destroyed during a war lasting from 1558 to 1570, the shrine was then rebuilt in 1690. The project was overseen by the legendary samurai Tokugawa Mitsukuni, who also become very popular on Japanese TV, being featured on the TV drama Mito Komon from 1969 to 2011, with no less than 1227 episodes!
What makes this shrine special, besides its benefactor Tokugawa Mitsukuni, is its three torii gates. The first one is located on a rock formation in the sea known as the Kamiiso-no-torii, the second is a gigantic, 15.60m high and 22.42m wide, metallic one, know as the Ichi-no-torii located at the foot of the shrine’s hill. Finally the Ni-no-torii is located on top of the aforementioned hill and in front ot the shrine.
Often ignored by both Japanese and foreign tourists, Oaraiisosaki Shrine is one of those little wonders that are highly recommended to visit if you have the chance to travel around Ibaraki.

Yamanashi Koyo-dai – 紅葉台 – 4K Ultra HD
Yamanashi Koyo-dai – 紅葉台 – 4K Ultra HD : Koyo-dai, also known as Koyodai, is according to some people the best place to to enjoy Mt. Fuji in all its glory, and to be honest it would be very difficult to argue with this statement. Located on a small mountain north of Mt. Fuji, Koyo-dai offers a nice 360 degree panoramic viewing tower.
This tower is located on top of a very old, and mostly unused restaurant (that we thought at first was abandoned) operated by an old gentleman. Difficult to access by car, Koyo-dai is still highly recommended if you are interested in shooting some stunning pictures of Mt; Fuji and its surrounding area, any time of the year!

Yamanashi Iyashi no Sato – いやしの里 – 4K Ultra HD
Yamanashi Iyashi no Sato – いやしの里 – 4K Ultra HD : Destroyed by a landslide in 1966, Iyashi no Sato was a former village located near Lake Saiko and in front of Mt. Fuji. It was only in 2000 that some former villagers and the city hall, decided to rebuild the place into a magnificent open air museum. Here people can not only enjoy some of village’s oldest artefact but also art, craftwork and traditional Japanese sweets and food.
Despite being 100% tourist oriented, the Iyashi no Sato is really a nice little village that needs to be visited if you are traveling around Mt Fuji.

Yamanashi Aokigahara Jukai – 青木ヶ原 – 4K Ultra HD
Yamanashi Aokigahara Jukai – 青木ヶ原 – 4K Ultra HD : Located at the foot of Fujisan (Mt. Fuji) the Aokigahara Jukai is a magnificent forest with an unfortunate dark side. Because of its imposing size (35 square kilometers) and its many rocky and icy caverns, many people come here to commit suicide every year.
Despite this downside, Aokigahara Jukai, when you follow one of its many official trails, offers some stunning views of of trees and lava rocks covered by moss that have been left untouched for centuries. There are also many caves in the area and some are open for tourists to explore. Dense, difficult to penetrate and somewhat “mystical”, Aokigahara Jukai is yet another place to go if you ever have the chance to visit Japan one day.

Shizuoka Kiun-kaku – 起雲閣 – 4K Ultra HD
Shizuoka Kiun-kaku – 起雲閣 – 4K Ultra HD: Located in Atami City’s center and originally built by a shipping magnate in 1919, Kiun-kaku (also known as Kiunkaku) served until 1947 as a private villa to different owners including the railroad tycoon Kaichiro Nezu. It’s interesting to note here that Kaichiro also happens to be the original owner of the Nezu garden and museum in Tokyo. In 1947 Kiun-kaku was transformed into one of Japan’s most famous Ryokans, functioning as such until 1999.
Kiun-Kaku’s fame not only comes from its past owners, but also for its elegant approach to mixing Japanese traditional architecture alongside Western and East Asian influenced interior design.
Without a doubt, it is this unique atmosphere that has attracted some of Japan’s greatest authors including Naoya Shiga, Junichiro Tanizaki and Osamu Dazai.
Now a museum, Kiun-Kaku is visited by more than 3 millions people per year and should definitely be on your “must see” todo list when going to Izu!
