Kyoto Yoshimine-Dera – 善峯寺 – 4K Ultra HD

Note : This version replace the previously uploaded video of the Yoshimine-Dera temple. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Kyoto Yoshimine-Dera – 善峯寺 – 4K Ultra HD : Yoshimie-dera or Yoshimiedera (善峯寺) is a temple of the Tendai school of Buddishm located in the mountains of Kyoto’s western ward of Nishikyō-ku which overlooks the city.

Established in 1029 as a personal retreat for a priest from Enryakuji, named Gesan, Yoshimie-dera was destroyed in 1467 during the Omin war and later rebuilt in 1621. The temple’s main objects of worship are a Kannon statue carved by Gesan himself and a Kannon statue given to the temple by Emperor Gosuzaku in 1042.

Surprisingly unpopular among foreign tourists, Yoshimie-dera is an amazing and spacious temple featuring many buildings and protected by a surrounding forest that, once a year in autumn, give you one of Kyoto’s most amazing scenes.

Kyoto Jojuji Temple – 浄住寺 – 4K Ultra HD

Kyoto Jojuji Temple – 浄住寺 – 4K Ultra HD : Jojuji may not be the most visited temple in Kyoto, nor the biggest in size, but thanks to its unique entrance, Jojuji offers, especially in autumn, one of Kyoto’s most magical Momiji (red maple leaves) experiences. And to be fair, and at least for us at TokyoStreetView, Jojuji is exactly what Kyoto is all about; a small and secluded, but truly fantastic, Zen temple that has yet to be too populated by tourists.

Twice a year Odaiba hosts one of Tokyo’s most popular fireworks displays. While the Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks spectacular, held every summer in Odaiba, may be the more famous, this smaller one, also known as the Odaiba Rainbow Fireworks, is definitely worth checking out.

Designed to spread Christmas cheer and love, the Odaiba Rainbow Fireworks is a 10-minute long show held every Saturday in December, offering impressive pyrotechnics displays that set off around 1,800 fireworks each show.

Tokyo Jindai-Ji – 深大寺 – 4K Ultra HD : Founded in 733 and converted to the Tendai Sect in 859, Jindai-ji is actually the second oldest temple in Tokyo area after Sensoji in Asakuasa. Rather difficult to access from Tokyo, Jindai-ji is actually located in the Tokyo suburb of Chofu, but this temple has much to offer for anyone willing to make the trip out there.

Beside the temple by itself, there are many things to do and discover at Jindai-Ji, chief among them a representation of the temple’s founder in the form of a wooden statue that Japanese people worship and touch for good luck. Less spiritual but still pretty mystical is the Gegege no Kitaro Chaya. This is a store dedicated to the Japanese manga and animation, Gegege no Kitaro, whose author, Shigeru Mizuki, took the temple as inspiration for his main character’s world.

Jindai-ji also hosts a pet cemetery as well as many Soba restaurants located by the temple entrance.

Kyoto Oharano Shrine – 大原野神社 – 4K Ultra HD : Erected in 768 and located in in the south-west area of Kyoto on the slopes of Mount Oshio, Oharano Shrine is a Shinto shrine related to the Fujiwara clan, one of Japanese history’s most powerful families from 794 to 1185.

It is said that that when the capital was moved from Nara to Nagaoka in 784, the Fujiwara clan invited their god to move to a new shrine at Oharano, and did so by entering the capital riding on the back of a deer. This helps to explain why centuries later, the shrine has dedicated an important place within its grounds to this holy animal.
