Nagano Togakushi-Hokosha – 宝光社 – 4K Ultra HD

Nagano Togakushi-Hokosha- 宝光社 – 4K Ultra HD : The Togakushi-Hōkōsha (宝光社) shrine is the second of the three major Togakushi shrines and is located rather close to the the main shrine the Togakushi-Chūsha (中社). Just slightly smaller than its bigger brother, this shrine is only accessible by a long and difficult set of stairs that will quickly do its best to make your journey more difficult in winter. I am not ashamed to admit that I slipped several times on my way down and had to finish my journey on my “lower back” to avoid any injuries.

Despite being small, Togakushi-Hōkōsha, is a gorgeous shrine with wonderful wood carvings that are a treat for our eyes. Add to that beauty the mystical silence of a snowy day and you have all the ingredients for a truly amazing experience.

Nagano Togakushi Shrine – 戸隠神社 – 4K Ultra HD

Nagano Togakushi Shrine – 戸隠神社 – 4K Ultra HD Today’s video will be a little special since it is actually the first video in a series of three. Indeed the famous shrine (jinja) Togakushi in Nagano is spread across three main locations with each place hosting respectively, the main shrine the Togakushi-Chūsha (中社), the Togakushi-Hōkōsha (宝光社) and the Togakushi-Okusha (奥社). There are actually 2 more smaller shrines (the Hino-miko-sha and the Kuzuryu-sha is God) but they are not as majestic as the other ones and only matter in a purely spiritual way.

The three shrines are in fact separated, a distance of about 2km between each other, and are all located in the Togakushi village at the base of the Mount Togakushi (1,904m) in Nagano prefecture.

According to the legend, these shrines histories started in 210 B.C. but it is only in 684 that a temporary building was erected and we had to wait until 849 for the first monks to come and live there.

The shrines are related to an important story in Japanese mythology in which the Sun Goddess hid herself in a cave in Kyushu after her brother had misbehaved by bringing darkness to the world.

In order to get the sunlight back, the other divinities tried to lure the Sun Goddess out of the cave by performing gorgeous dance performances in front of her cave. As the Sun Goddess start to took a peek out, one of the divinities grabbed the cave’s stone door and threw it away to prevent her from hiding again. The stone door flew all the way to Togakushi in Nagano, which is also how the area got its name: Togakushi (戸隠) stands for “hiding door”.

Now you have the back story, today’s video will concentrate on the main shrine, the Togakushi-Chūsha (中社), while the next two will cover the Togakushi-Hōkōsha (宝光社) and the Togakushi-Okusha (奥社).

Ishikawa Kami Tokikuni House – 本家上時国家 – 4K Ultra HD

Ishikawa Kami Tokikuni House – 本家上時国家 – 4K Ultra HD : The Kami Tokikuni House is the most important residence of the defeated Taira general named Tairo no Tokidata, after he lost the battle of Dannoura. Sent in exile to the isolated region of the Noto peninsula, the general disavowed the clan and stopped using the name Taira, also known as Heike (which literally means “House of Taira) to create his own clan : the Tokikuni.

Far from his past exploits, the new head of the Tokikuni clan, started to help the neighbouring village farmers, who had been in great distress, but with his help prospered as a wealthy farming family in the region for many years to come.

Ishikawa Noto Kongo Coast – 能登金剛 – 4K Ultra HD

Ishikawa Noto Kongo Coast – 能登金剛 – 4K Ultra HD : The Noto Kongo Coast is a 14km long rock formation along the Sea of Japan and located on the west side of the Noto Peninsula below Wajima City. Facing tough elements like harsh winds and the wrath of the wild ocean, the Noto Kongo Coast is considered by many as one of the most beautiful coastal scenes of the Noto Peninsula.

While it may be difficult to give you an exhaustive list of all the best spots to visit, we can advise you to go and check Hatago Iwa rocks, which like Meoto Iwa, featured on our Ise coverage, are joined by a Shimenawa rope, rope used in Shinto to mark the presence of sacred spirits.

Another interesting spot would be the Ganmon Rock formation where Ganmon means ‘gate rock’. You can either visit the place on foot or, if you have enough time, enjoy a nice little boat ride to get a unique view of the area.

Ishikawa Mitsukejima – 見附島 – 4K Ultra HD

Ishikawa Mitsukejima – 見附島 – 4K Ultra HD : Located on the opposite side of Wajima on the Noto peninsula, Mitsukejima is an small, uninhabited island (150m long, 50m wide and 30m tall) famous for its unique shape. Also known as Gunkanjima “Battleship Island” because of its shape, this island has no link whatsoever with the other famous island named Gunkanjima, located in Nagasaki.

According to local folklore, Mitsukejima was named by a local monk and artist, Kūkai (774–835), who was apparently the first person to discover this island when travelling from Sado Island.

Ishikawa Wajima Morning Market – 輪島朝市 – 4K Ultra HD

Ishikawa Wajima Morning Market – 輪島朝市 – 4K Ultra HD :

Let’s face it, the Noto peninsula is far from being the most popular tourist destination in Japan. Only accessible by plane or by car (no railways), this secluded place in Japan is actually a little heaven on earth for those who are looking to enjoy Japan without a horde of tourists (Japanese or not). Wajima, the largest city of the Noto peninsula, is well-known in Japan for its lacquerware, Kiriko and its morning market.

Open daily from 8am to 12am, this market is believed to date back over a thousand years and there you will not only find some of Wajima famous lacquerware, but also fresh seafood and produce that comes straight from the huge port located behind the market itself.
