Hiroshima Shukkei-en Garden – 縮景園 – 4K Ultra HD

Hiroshima Shukkei-en Garden – 縮景園 : Built in 1620 at the order of Asano Nagaakira, a powerful feudal lord (Daimyo) of the Hiroshima clan, the Shukkein-en garden later served as the villa of the Asano family during the Meiji period. Shukkeien, which can be translated into English as “shrunken-scenery garden”, includes valleys, mountains and forests represented in miniature all across the garden.

It was donated by the Asano family itself to Hiroshima Prefecture in 1940. Unfortunately, lying pretty close to ground zero during the nuclear attack on the city, the garden suffered extensive damage and later became a refuge for the victims of the war. It was only after a long renovation process that the garden reopened to the public in 1951.

Note that only the garden stone bridge featured on this video was still standing after the nuclear blast.

Kanagawa Yokohama Sankei-en Garden – 三溪園 – 4K Ultra HD

Located outside of Yokohama and somehow in the middle of an industrial area, Sankei-en garden is an oasis of beauty and calm. Erected in 1904 by a silk trader named Tomitaro Hara, also known as Hara Sankei, this garden features, in one location, the many wonders of Japan.

Thanks to his fortune, Tomitaro Hara brought from different places across Japan, such as Tokyo, Kyoto, Kamakura, Gifu and Wakayama, many historically significant structures. These include an elegant daimyo (feudal lord) residence, a few tea houses and even the main hall and three storied pagoda of Kyoto’s old Tomyoji temple.

Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome Tour – 原爆ドーム – 4K Ultra HD

Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome – 原爆ドーム : Japan is the only country in the world that had to suffer the horror of one of the most destructive forces ever created by mankind : an atomic bomb.

Preserved as a witness of such horror, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, also known as the Atomic Bomb Dome or Genbaku Dome, was the only structure left standing in the area where the first atomic bomb exploded on 6 August 1945.

It is honestly difficult to describe the chilling effect that such a sight gives you in real life and once in front of this structure, one can only hope that we will soon evolve into more compassionate and peaceful beings, strong enough to put an end to worldwide suffering.

Free download : Cherry Blossom Photo Guide eBook “Tokyo No Sakura”

Cherry Blossom Photo Guide eBook “Tokyo No Sakura”: Although widely spread in the Northern hemisphere, the sakura tree is nowhere as important as it is in Japan, where it holds the status of national flower. The abrupt transience of its blossoms, the delicate and ephemeral beauty of its flower has led Japan to associate the sakura tree with mortality and is therefore richly symbolic. The sakura flower can indeed be found in many aspects of the daily life in Japan: from the 100 yen coins, to dishware as well as on Kimonos.

All sakura trees are not made equal and, believe it or not, there are 200 different types of sakura trees in Japan! They differ by the flowering period, number of petals and each variety features flowers with a unique shape and colour, which ranges from white – often seen in Tokyo – to a deep pink. There is even a more yellowish variety known as the ukon family of sakura.

Ishikawa Kanazawa Castle – 金沢城 – 4K Ultra HD

Ishikawa Kanazawa Castle – 金沢城 : One of Ishikawa prefecture’s most well known splendors, Kanazawa Castle, has been the pinnacle of power and architecture in the region since 1583. Official headquarters and strong hall of the powerful Maeda Clan, the castle has, however, suffered many disasters and been rebuilt several times including the most recent addition in 2015 of the Gyokuseninmaru Garden (not on this video) and Hashizume-mon Gate (on this video).

Beautiful all year long, it is however during the hanami season (cherry blossoms) and in winter, under a thick blanket of snow, that Kanazawa Castle is by far at is best!

Tokyo Okusawa Shrine in the summer rain – 奥澤神社 – 4K Ultra HD

Tokyo Okusawa Shrine under the summer rain – 奥澤神社 : Okusawa Shrine is one of those little shrines that you can find pretty much anywhere in Japan, with the exception, however, of its giant dragons made of rope that welcome you at the shrine’s entrance and in the shrine itself.

So why take a video of this temple? The rain of course! Indeed there is always something magic about the Japanese rainy season, and if you have the chance to visit Japan during this period, go and find a small Shrine surrounded by trees for a magical, or mystical experience. You won’t regret it!

Ishikawa Kenroku-En Garden – 兼六園 – 4K Ultra HD

—- Note : This video replace the previous uploaded version which came with a small typo in its opening title. Sorry for the inconvenience —

Ishikawa Kenroku-En Garden – 兼六園 : Kenroku-En is, according to many specialists, one of Japan’s “three most beautiful gardens! Located just in front of Kanazawa Castle, Kenroku-En, was constructed by the ruling Maeda family in 1620 and opened to the public in 1871.

The name Kenroku-En literally means, “the garden of six sublimities”, or one that combines the six aspects of a perfect garden. This ‘measurement’ is based on Chinese gardening tradition and includes : spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, water-courses and panoramas. Beautiful all year long, it is however during the sakura (Spring) and koyo (Autumn) seasons that Kenroku-En is truly fantastic, and rest assured we will do our best to shoot another video of this park at point during both these high points.

Ishikawa Kanazawa Higashi Chaya – 東茶屋街 – 4K Ultra HD

Ishikawa Kanazawa Higashi Chaya – 東茶屋街 : Located in Ishikawa Prefecture and a good 2 hours away from Tokyo by Shinkansen, Kanazawa is one of those cities where time has somehow stopped, giving us the chance to enjoy Japan like never before! This is especially true in Kanazawa Higashi Chaya District, which is the geisha district of Kanazawa and as such is one of its most well-preserved areas.

Much more modest than Kyoto’s geisha district, Higashi Chaya does however offer the chance for its visitors to not only enjoy some of Kanazawa’s most delicious treats and tea, but also the opportunity to visit some of the many guest house used in the past by geisha as living quarters (Ochaya Shima Guest House).

If beer and sake are more your thing, rest assured that Higashi Chaya has everything you need, and if you are curious enough you will exactly find what you are looking for in this district with a big selection of traditional bars and restaurants.
