The Coal Miners Defending The World’s Most Controversial Coal Mine
Coal miners and climate activists regularly face off in heated and sometimes violent confrontations in the coal mining towns of Australia’s Queensland. On one hand, Australia is the world’s largest exporter of coal, and on the other, it’s becoming a social pariah in a world going more green. Filmmaker and Environmental activist Kim Nguyen goes deep within Australia’s coal country to meet miners trying to preserve coal towns, aboriginal activists trying to stop the Adani Carmichael coal mining project, and a horseman infamous for assaulting climate protestors. All to ask- how do you get coal miners to give up that one thing their livelihood depends on?

Jojakko-Ji Temple – Kyoto – 常寂光寺
Located on the side of Mt Ogura in Kyoto’s famous Arashiyama district, lies Jojakko-ji Temple. It was founded in 1596 by Nisshin, the head priest of Honkoku-ji. What makes Jojakko-ji interesting, is not only that the temple is one of Kyoto’s best autumn leaf spots that features a nice 12m tall pagoda, but it is by Kyoto’s standard, a place often set aside and ignored by travelers. Jojakko-ji is a little piece of paradise in what is often a too crowded Kyoto.

Inside The Opioid Crisis Gripping This Himalayan State | Trouble in Paradise
There have been claims of Pakistan pushing drugs into the India’s border state of Punjab, as an act of alleged Narco-terrorism for decades. Once Punjab doubled down on drug trafficking in the state, its neighbour Himachal seemed to have become collateral damage.
India’s northernmost state Himachal Pradesh is in the grips of a heroin crisis, with double the number of illegal opioid users per capita as compared to the rest of India. VICE World News’ Esha Paul meets drug peddlers, recovering addicts, and the police on Himachal’s borders to see how a rural state known for being a tourist paradise spiralled into an opioid epidemic.

Yuzen-en Garden – Kyoto – 友禅苑
Located in Kyoto’s Higashiyama Ward near the entrance of Chion-in Temple, the Yuzen-en Garden is dedicated to Miyazaki Yuzen, a famous painter of folding fans in the Edo-period. He invented Japan’s unique and best-known traditional dyeing process: the Yuzen-style.
The Yuzen-style dyeing process involves drawing designs on white fabric with paste and dyeing the fabric in a wide variety of colors. Once the fabric has been cut into a kimono shape, a rough draft is drawn using an Aobana (or blue flower) colorant that washes out without leaving a trace.
The Yuzen-en Garden was redesigned in 1954 into what we can see and enjoy today. It includes two parts, one part that draws water from the Higashiyama spring and features two teahouses and one in the traditional Karesansui style (Dry rock garden).
