Tokyo Kanda Yushima Seido – 湯島聖堂 – 4K Ultra HD

Tokyo Kanda Yushima Seido – 湯島聖堂 Located a short walking distance from the famous Kanda Myojin Shrine, Yushima Seido is a shrine dedicated to Confucius, the well known and respected Chinese scholar. Confucianism was very popular in Japan during the latter part of the Edo period (1603 ~ 1867) and Yushima Seido used to be part of Confucian school during the same period.

With its rather simple or spartan design, Yushima Seido is a good example of Confucian architecture during this period and comes with the striking feature of being covered in Japanese black urushi (lacquer). This emphasizes the desire to embody the simple, yet delicate philosophy of Confucianism.

Chiba Naritasan Shinshoji Temple – 成田山 – 4K Ultra HD

Chiba Naritasan Shinshoji Temple – 成田山 : Founded in 940 by Kanchō Daisōjō, a disciple of Kōbō Daishi, Naritasan (Narita-san) Shinshoji (Shinsho-ji) is a Shingon Buddhist temple located in central Narita, and near Narita airport.

Despite its age, Naritasan remained a remote and humble temple until Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川 家康) moved his capital to Edo in 1603. Only then did Naritasan Shinshoji, both in fame and size, start to grow. As for today, the temple features many different buildings including the gorgeous two-storey Great Pagoda of Peace located far behind the main hall, as well as a colorful and more traditional three storey pagoda adjacent to the great main hall. Located a short walk from the great main hall you will find the Shakado Hall, Gakudo Hall (under renovation when this video was shot), the Komyodo Hall and even a museum dedicated to Japanese calligraphy!

Tokyo Aoyama Cemetery – 青山霊園 – 4K Ultra HD

Tokyo Aoyama Cemetery – 青山霊園 : Aoyama, like Yanaka, hosts a huge cemetery located in the center of Tokyo and open to the public. First opened in 1872 as Tokyo’s’ first municipal cemetery, Aoyama Cemetery hosts many wealthy and historical Japanese figures as its permanent guests, and, surprisingly, Aoyama cemetery is one of the few cemeteries in Japan that has a large section dedicated to foreigners (from Europe and America) that came to help modernize Japan.

But what makes Aoyama Cemetery particularly special is its many cherry blossom trees that once a year capture the attention of thousands of people, who can celebrate spring, and life itself, around the graves of their ancestors.
