Completed in 1612, Nagoya Castle was designed to solidify the Tokugawa family’s authority in the Owari region, which includes both present Nagoya and its surrounding area. With time, the surrounding village of Nagoya Castle grew to be Japan’s fourth largest city : Nagoya.

While the castle suffered from major damage during the second world war, extensive works were made to fully restore this beautiful castle, including its main “palace” where construction will end around 2018.

Finally, Nagoya Castle is also famous for its two golden ‘shachihoko’, an animal from Japanese folklore with the head of a tiger and the body of a carp, sitting atop of the castle’s main keep.

Founded in the 7th century, Zenkō-ji (Zenko-ji) Temple is actually one of the most important and popular temples in Japan, and stores the first ever Buddhist statue bought in Japan when Buddhism was first introduced during the 6th century.

Zenkō-ji’s fame does not stop here, since the temple itself was founded before Buddhism in Japan split into different sects, and as such, Zenkō-ji currently belongs to both the Tendai and Jōdoshū schools of Buddhism. It is co-managed by twenty-five priests from the former school, and fourteen from the latter.

Finally, and unlike many other cities in Japan, Zenkō-ji is at the center of the birth of Nagano City as the city itself was built around the temple.

Located near Nagoya Tower in the Sakae district, Oasis 21 is a multi-level recreational and commercial park equipped with a bus terminal. First opened to the public in 2002, Oasis 21’s major attraction is its oval roof glass structure, also known as “Spaceship Aqua”. The roof just happens to be filled with water, which not only creates an interesting visual effect, but also brings downs the temperature of the shopping area below.

Chiba Port Tower is nothing more than an observatory tower located in the port-side area of Chiba city, in the prefecture of the same name.
It is 125 meters tall, yet with only 4 floors, and located on the top of this tower is a cafe which sits alongside an observatory room.

The tower was opened in 1986 and built in commemoration of Chiba Prefecture’s population exceeding the five-million mark in 1983.

With its unique design and entirely covered of reflective windows, the Chiba Port Tower is a breathtaking, architectural wonder that seems to pierce the sky like a ‘katana’.

Chiba Shrine – 千葉神社 : Chiba Shrine was erected in 1181, and dedicated to the Shinto deity Myoken, a “bosatsu” who is the personification of the Polaris Star. Myoken is believed to offer protection from bad luck and bad health.

Located within walking distance of the city’s main station, the architecture of Chiba Shrine is set apart from what we are used to seeing at Shinto shrines in Japan. This shrine offers, for example, a two-storey and rather modern central building, with a peaceful little garden and a pond filled with koi fish.

Chiba Castle – 千葉城 : Located a good hour away from Tokyo and in Chiba City, the Chiba Castle or Inohana-jo, was first built in 1126 by Tsuneshige Chiba. He was the first ‘gunji’ administrator of Sōma District, and was then transferred to the same position in Chiba District.

For many centuries, the Chiba family ruled over the area from this castle. Then in 1455, Makuwari Yasutane, a relative of the Chiba family, attacked and defeated them resulting in the castle’s demise. Thanks to his lineage Makuwari Yasutane took over the name of the Chiba family and decided to build his own castle, the Honsakura Castle, in the nearby city of Sakura, leaving the first Chiba family’s castle in ruins.

It was only in 1967, that the City of Chiba decided to give Chiba Castle a second life with a new and modern design. Though it is far removed from what the first castle built in 1126 looked like, it now doubles as the city’s official folk museum

Itsukushima Daisho-in – Hiroshima – 大聖院 : Daishō-in or Daisyō-in is the historic Japanese temple on Mount Misen, the holy mountain on the island of Itsukushima and walking distance from the famous Itsukushima Shrine. Founded in 806, Daisho-in is the 14th temple in the Chūgoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage and famous for the maple trees and their brilliant autumn colors. It is also called “Suishō-ji”. Including Mt. Misen, Daishō-in is included within the World Heritage Area of Itsukushima Shrine.

According to the temple staff, Daisho-in is home to a sacred flame which is said to have been burning since its foundation, over 1200 years ago.

Kanda Shrine – Tokyo – 神田明神 : Kanda Shrine was first built during the Tenpyo Era (730AD) in the fishing village of Shibasaki, near the modern Ōtemachi district. It was only in 1616 that the shrine was moved to its current location and this was to accommodate the expansion of Edo Castle. Today it is conveniently located a short distance on foot from Akihabara, Yushima Seido and Ochanomizu Station. It enshrines three deities : Daikokuten, the god of good harvests and matrimony. Ebisu, the god of fishermen and businessmen, and Taira Masakado a feudal lord of the 10th century who was revered and deified.

Despite being a humble, yet important shrine, Kanda Shrine is also very popular among anime fans thanks to the anime “Love Live!” in which the character of Nozomi Tojo serves as a shrine maiden at the Kandamyoujin shrine. Since then she has become the shrine’s official mascot.

Finally, Kanda Shrine holds every odd year the Kanda Matsuri. It has been observed since the 1600s when Tokugawa Ieyasu celebrated his decisive victory at the battle of Sekigahara. Being one of Tokyo’s three major Shinto festivals, the Kanda Matsuri is EXTREMELY popular among Japanese and one of the rare places where Yakuza can proudly display their tattoos in public!

Tokyo Ochanomizu Station – 御茶ノ水駅 : Just one stop away from Akihabara Station, Ochanomizu Station is just your average train station that connects different subway and train lines to each other. Additionally it functions as a hub for anyone who wants to visit places such as the Nikolai Cathedral, Yushima Seido, Kanda Myojin, the Japan Football Museum, Tokyo Medical & Dental University and the Tokyo Medical & Dental University Hospital.

But, because of its location and many train lines intersections, Ochanomizu also offers one of the best stops for amateur photographers and videographers all year long, day or night! Actually, we would recommend anyone wanting to shoot amazing pictures to aim to shoot between when the golden hour begins until late into the night for best results!
