Danjo Garan Koyasan – Wakayama – 壇上伽藍 – 4K Ultra HD
Danjo Garan is another important place of worship in Koyasan and where Kobo Daishi is also worshipped. The legend has it that Kobo Daishi himself, when studying in China, threw his Sankosho (a pestle with three prongs at each end, usually made of gilt bronze) toward Japan and landed in a pine tree. It was only when back from China, and looking for a place to erect the headquarters of his new religion that he came across his Sankosho still stuck in the branches of a pine tree. So he decided to start construction of his headquarters around the tree.
According to the temple administrators, Kobo Daishi worked on the construction of both the main hall and the Konpon Daito Pagoda, a 45m tall red tahoto style pagoda where a statue of Dainichi Nyorai (Cosmic Buddha, also known as Variocana) rests.
After Kobo Daishi ‘s death, his followers continued his work and worked on erecting several other buildings including Toto and Saito, two other pagodas, as well as Miedo, the founder’s hall, and Koya Myojin Shrine, which enshrines Mount Koya’s local kami (God).

Okunoin Cemetery Koyasan – Wakayama – 奥の院 – 4K Ultra HD
Koya-san or Koyasan is a mountain located in Wakayam prefecture and in the center of the Shingo Buddhist sect introduced to Japan in 805 by Kobo Daishi (see Ōsu Kannon – Nagoya), one of Japan’s most important religious figures. It was then natural that such an important and well-respected figure would have to rest in their own mausoleum : Okunoin.
While the mausoleum itself, like most other ones in Japan, is rather anticlimactic and where (for good reasons), cameras are not allowed, it is however the approach to Kobo Daishi mausoleum, the Okunoin cemetery that will probably amaze you the most.
With over 200,000 tombstones located pretty much everywhere along the approach to the mausoleum, the Okunoin cemetery comes straight out of one of those Japanese ghost stories with neglected moss-covered tombstones standing immune to the passing of time.
Magical, the Okunoin cemetery is at its best early in the morning or during a misty day where, if you are lucky enough, you will have the chance to hear the trees cracking under the pressure of the wind.

Gujō Hachiman – Gifu – 郡上市 – 4K Ultra HD
Located in central Gifu, Gujō Hachiman seems to be one of those small towns where time passes by ten times slower than usual. At the confluence of the upper Nagara-gawa (river) and the Yoshida-gawa (river), this town, founded in the 16th century following the construction of the Hachiman Castle, is known for two main things. Firstly, its pristine waterways where many people come and fish, and secondly for its unique summer dance festival, the Gujo Dori which continues from July to September for a period of thirty-one nights!
