How I Survived Thailand’s Worst Mass Shootout | I Was There

On 8th Feb 2020, in the North-eastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, a soldier shot dead his commanding officer and mother-in-law over a financial dispute. The soldier went on to steal weapons and a Humvee before driving to Terminal 21 Korat Shopping Mall, where he continued his killing rampage. 32-year-old beauty advisor, Ratcharnon Chestnork, was there. He was trapped in an electric control room overnight, and was one of the last people to be rescued before the Thai authorities went in and took out the gunman.

Bali’s Bamboo Revolution is Shaping the Future of Architecture

Faced with the challenges of a global pandemic, the word “pivot” was on every business owner’s mind when things started shutting down. For Bamboo U’s founder, Orin Hardy, the difficulties were especially pronounced.

A design and build intensive course, Bamboo U needed participants to be physically in Bali for an 11-day immersion into the bamboo world. When the pandemic hit, Bamboo U could not conduct in-person classes and the financial responsibilities piled on. With a baby on the way, Orin looked inward for inspiration, and found an inner world of virtual possibilities. He gives us a peek into his world and how he harnessed technology to adapt and emerge stronger.

Haguro-san Five-Story Pagoda – Yamagata – 羽黒山五重塔

As one of Japan’s mythical three holy mountains of Dewa, Mt Haguro is surrounded by a lush forest and has been welcoming visitors to its peak since the 6th Century A.D. Climbing to the top of Dewa is not an easy trek with its 2,446 stone steps. But, prior to doing so, you will be welcomed by a gorgeous five-story pagoda, which happens to be the oldest and tallest in the Tohoku region. Originally constructed during the Heian Period (794-1185) it was later rebuilt in 1372. Built in the kokerabuki shiraki zukuri style, the whole structure does not feature any nails or metallic fasteners.

Superstar Rajinikanth’s Japanese Superfan

In 1998, Indian superstar Rajinikanth’s film Muthu opened to a phenomenal response from Japanese fans, becoming a runaway hit at the Japanese box office, staying in the theatre for more than 100 days.

Yasuda Hidetoshi’s tryst with Rajinikanth’s movies also began with Muthu, released in Japan as Muthu-The Dancing Maharaja. Yasuda is one of Rajinikanth’s biggest fans; running a Japanese fan site dedicated to the superstar, travelling to Chennai for the release of every new Rajinikanth movie, organising events that celebrate the superstar’s birthday and new movie release in Japan with other fans. He can often be seen zipping around in an autorickshaw that he imported from India to Japan, in honour of one of Rajinikanth’s characters from Baasha who was an autorickshaw driver. VICE met Yasuda in Osaka, Japan to understand how he became a Rajinikanth fan, stories and experiences from his travels to India, what it was like to meet Rajinikanth in person and what it means to be a fan of the superstar.

How Old Movies Are Professionally Restored | Movies Insider

All film stocks decompose over time. Sometimes this decomposition is irreversible — which explains why an estimated 75% of American silent films are considered lost. We visited The George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York, to see how its team rescues old movies and restores them to their former glory.

The Eastman Museum runs one of the world’s top film-preservation programs. Its archives of over 28,000 films include the personal collections of directors like Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese and carefully controlled nitrate vaults containing over 26 million feet of film.

The museum’s preservation projects include the silent films of Cecil B. DeMille and Georges Méliès, along with Stanley Kubrick’s first film, “Fear and Desire,” from 1953, and Orson Welles’ once-lost work “Too Much Johnson,” from 1938. Its recent restoration of the 1935 Oscar Micheaux film “Murder in Harlem” screened at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.

The Horrors I’ve Witnessed on the Underground

A London Underground employee reveals the darker side of night work, some of the dangers he’s found himself in, and why the night tube isn’t always a ‘haven of safety’.

He reveals how working on the underground is much more than just manning the platforms and driving trains, and that staff must adapt to dealing with serious violence, sexual harassment and people jumping in front of trains. With minimal training and lack of support, he highlights just how difficult the job can be, and the sometimes fatal effects of working nights.
