Giouji Temple (Gioji Temple) – Kyoto – 祇王寺
Located deep in the Arashiyama district northwest of Kyoto, Giou-ji Temple (Giouji / Gioji) is a quiet temple surrounded by trees and a luxuriant moss garden. The temple is named after Gio a Shirabyoshi in Kyoto a female Japanese traditional dancer who lived during the Heian Period.
The story goes that Gio fell in love with the Heike Clan’s powerful leader Taira-no-Kiyomori and asked him to help the villagers of her hometown of Yasu. He built a water channel known today as Gioi-gawa. Unfortunately for Gio, Taira-no-Kiyomori grew tired of Gio and his affection changed to another Shirabyoshi dancer: Hotoke-gozen (1160-1180).
Sad, Gio retreated to this temple to spend the rest of her life as a Buddhist priestess, along with her sister, mother, and another of Kiyomori’s spurned lovers.

How The Sounds In “Halo” Are Made | Movies Insider | Insider
Ever wonder how video games get their sound effects? We go behind the scenes of Halo, one of the world’s most popular video games, to find out how the game builds everything from its weapon sound effects to its sci-fi environment.
Creating the sound effects for the latest release, Halo Infinite, required creative Foley and field recording techniques to capture and distort real-world sounds that they can then use out of context in the game.
Halo Infinite’s lead sound designer Kyle Fraser and senior sound designers Robbie Elias and Jomo Kangethe break down the techniques used in destinations as far-flung as Tasmania, an airport runway, and a vintage farm machinery heritage site.
They walk us through the sound effects for vehicles, weapons, and destruction in the game, along with the detailed ambiance and environmental sound for the multiplayer maps.
Halo Infinite is available now with Xbox Game Pass.

Weapons Masters Rate 7 Duels in Movies and TV | How Real Is It
Medieval-weapons expert Toby Capwell and master-at-arms of the London Longsword Academy Dave Rawlings look at seven duels from movies and TV and rate them based on realism. They discuss the rules and formalities around judicial duels and trials by combat.
They look at the fight between Adam Driver and Matt Damon in “The Last Duel” (2021), mounted trial by combat in “Ivanhoe” (1952), and a knightly duel in “Excalibur” (1981). They also rate scenes from “Game of Thrones” (2011-2019), “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” (2008), “Flash Gordon” (1980), and a fight between Captain Kirk and Gorn in “Star Trek” S1E18 (1967).
Capwell is an author, lecturer, broadcaster, and the curator of arms and armor at The Wallace Collection in London. He is the historical advisor on the new feature film about King Richard III, “The Lost King,” coming out in autumn 2022. Rawlings has over 15 years’ experience teaching Western swordsmanship. He has been featured in the documentary series “Warriors” and “Bloody Tales of the Tower.” He advised The Wallace Collection on its exhibition “The Noble Art of the Sword,” and he teaches longsword at the London Longsword Academy.

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake razed Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, to the ground in 2018. The earthquake and the tsunami that followed killed almost 5,000 people. Whole villages were swallowed in by ground liquefaction, where the sediments at or near the ground’s surface lose their strength as a result of the strong ground shakes. Many were buried alive. VWN met with Ista Nur Masyithah to hear her account of this horrific incident.
