Gifu Shirakawa-Go Ogimachi Winter Part I – 白川郷 – 4K Ultra HD : Declared a UNESCO world heritage site since 1995, Shirakawa-Go is one of the hottest Japanese tourist spots that is hard to miss. Located in the remote mountains of Gifu prefecture, Shirakawa-Go is famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses with some as old as 250 years.
Shirakawa-Go’s most famous village, and the one featured in this video, is named Ogimachi which not only features an open air museum but also many gassho-zukuri farmhouses that are still used by villagers today.
Designed to withstand harsh winter conditions they are made entirely of wood with thatched roofs, and constructed without the use of a single nail!
Gorgeous all year long, winter gives this place a unique perspective that can not be missed offering, for a few days each year, the chance to enjoy the village at night with special illuminations.
However, and due to the overwhelming popularity of the place, the village looks more like Shibuya on a sunny Saturday afternoon or evening with literally several thousands of tourists from across the world crawling all over the place. We had the chance to visit the Ogimachi village ten years ago during the week in spring where tourists are usually busy visiting other places in Japan, and, if you can, we would highly recommend you skip Shirakawa-Go and its village during the winter and give the place a try during the less crowded seasons.
