Overlooking Mitake village and its gorge, Mt Mitake hosts on its top (929m) ryokan, houses and the beautiful Musashi Mitake Shrine. According to legend, the Musashi temple was erected over 2000 years ago, and features some gorgeous stone statues of Inari Wolf. Still according to the legend, it is said that Prince Yamato Takeru, the son of Japan’s 12th Emperor got lost in the forest of Mt Mitake after a demon transformed himself into a wild stag and led the Prince off a path. Lost and cold, the Prince was led to safety by a giant White Wolf. It is only after the prince went back home that he decided to proclaim the wolf as a deity and official guardian and protector of Mount Mitake.

Dominant le village de Mitake et ses gorges, le Mont Mitake (929m) abrite en son sommet non seulement quelques ryokans et des maisons, mais aussi le magnifique sanctuaire Musashi Mitake. D’après la légende, le temple Musashi fut érigé il y a plus de 2000 ans, et possède quelques statues de pierre d’Inrai Wolf. le prince Yamato Takeru, fils du 12ème empereur du Japon, se serait perdu dans la forêt du Mont Mitake après qu’un démon l’eut transformé en cerf sauvage puis l’abandonna hors de son chemin. Perdu et affaibli par le froid, le prince fut guidé par un loup blanc géant. Une fois rentré chez lui, le prince décida de faire du loup une divinité et le gardien protecteur officiel du Mont Mitake.
