Kebesu Fire Festival – Oita – ケベス祭 – 4K Ultra HD

Japan is full of amazing small and unique matsuris, or festivals. Kinusaki City Kebesu fire festival is by far one of the most interesting Matsuri we had the chance to see.

Being one of the oldest Matsuri in the area the origin of this fire festival is a bit confusing. The confusion extends to the term Kebesu as well. Some people believe it comes from a phrase in a norito, a Japanese Shinto prayer, referring to “a boy who kicks fire”, while others believe that it is, in fact, the local pronunciation of the of deity Ebisu.

Nevertheless, the Kebesu festival is about Kebesu. Wearing a wooden mask and armed with a wooden stick, a Samasuta tries to come and steal and put out a holy bonfire guarded and protected by Toba, men dressed in white.

Once the Kebesu defeated, Toba will run over the temple ground area and bless people with the holy fire, as its sparks are said to heal diseases and provide you with good health all year long.
Truly a unique experience that is quite hard to describe.

The sheer madness at the end of the festival makes it different in many ways. We can’t recommend enough that you give this matsuri a try during your next trip to Kinusaki!
