Jimmy Lai has long been a thorn in Beijing’s side. The owner of the unapologetically pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily, Lai has been at the forefront of Hong Kong’s protest movement for years.
Now, the 72-year-old media mogul faces life in prison under the city’s broad national security law on charges of colluding with foreign forces to endanger China’s security.
VICE News sat down with Lai before he was charged under the security law to discuss why he was continuing his fight in the face of overwhelming pressure.
