HBO’s “Chernobyl” mixes fact with fiction in its dramatization of the 1986 nuclear accident in Soviet Ukraine. Here are 12 things that didn’t happen exactly as they’re shown in the miniseries.
“Chernobyl” recounts the true story of the nuclear meltdown in the USSR. The five-part docudrama does a pretty good job of staying faithful to the original story; but the depictions of the events aren’t entirely based in fact.
We break down the full details of the nuclear disaster, including what the Unit 4 reactor actually looked like when it exploded, whether it truly posed a threat to the whole continent of Europe — and of course, whether the coal miners really worked naked.
How close were Boris Shcherbina and Valery Legasov IRL? Did the show accurately represent the details of Legasov’s death? How much the Soviet Union try to cover up the accident? Was Ulana Khomyuk a real person? And did the engineers at the plant really volunteer for that diving mission? Find out.
