Sumo Wrestler Rates 8 Sumo Scenes In Movies And TV | How Real Is It? | Insider

Sumo wrestler Konishiki Yasokichi rates eight sumo fights in movies and TV shows, such as “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Isle of Dogs,” for realism.

Konishiki discusses the accuracy of throwing techniques in “The Outsider” (2018), “Isle of Dogs” (2018), “Memoirs of a Geisha” (2005), “Austin Powers in Goldmember” (2002), and “The Quest” (1996). He also comments on sumo lifestyle and training in “Hinomaru Sumo” S1E6 (2018), “Sumo Do, Sumo Don’t” (1992), and “Secret Society” (2000).

Konishiki was the first non-Japanese-born wrestler to reach the level of ?zeki, the second-highest rank. He made his debut in 1982 and trained at Takasago stable. He is the host of the educational children’s show “Nihongo de Asobo” and has been featured in the films “Chekeraccho!!” and “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.”

He now tours with the Sumo and Sushi dining experience from SE Productions, which returns across the US in 2023.

Myosenji Temple – Sado – Niigata – 妙宣寺

Located in the heart of Sado Island in Niigata, Myosenji temple is connected to Nichiren Shonin, the founder of the Nichiren School of Buddhism who was exiled to Sado, which evokes a sense of medieval times.

Tamemori Endo (Abutsubo Nittoku Shonin) served Nichiren upon being exiled to Sado and became an avid believer of the Hokke mantra. Together with his wife, Sen-nichini, a Buddhist nun, he opened his residence as a temple in 1278. This is said to be the origin of Myosenji Temple. The temple used to be a residence of the Takeda Honma clan, deputy governor of Sado, and the ambience of a castle still remains. On site stands the only five-story pagoda in Niigata Prefecture, as well as the grave of Suketomo Hino, who was forced into exile on Sado after the Shochu Incident.

On July 29, 1911, Mohun Bagan beat the East Yorkshire Regiment to lift the IFA Shield – the first time an Indian team beat the British. It was the match that gave India’s freedom movement a much needed boost, and also helped usher in the golden age of football in India. Chokokuji Temple – Sado – Niigata – 長谷寺

Chokokuji Temple was founded in 807 by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) on the picturesque island of Sado in Niigata prefecture. Chokokuji features a unique design imitating the famous Hasedera Temple in Yamato prefecture. It goes to the extent to even use Hasedera Temple Kanji : 長谷寺. Chokokuji Temple is also famous for its historic background. Zeami paid a visit after landing on Sado Island, and he mentioned the temple in his book Kintosho (Writings of the Golden Isle). The temple is known for its flowers, including peony but also for its many cultural assets which shadow a living history. Varying from the three eleven-headed Kannon statues (National Important Cultural Properties), to statues of Kongo Rikishi (two wrath-filled guardians of the Buddha) made in the Heian Period (10th-12th centuries).
